Temporary Residence Card (TRC)

A temporary residence card is the closest thing to semi-permanent residency in Vietnam. It replaces the need for regular visa renewals and is available to those with a valid work permit, Vietnamese family ties, or significant investment in the country.

Requirements

  • Valid UK passport with validity exceeding the TRC duration requestedCRITICAL
  • Valid work permit, investor licence, or proof of family relationship with a Vietnamese citizenCRITICAL
  • Completed TRC application form (NA8)
  • Health check certificate from a Vietnamese-approved hospital
  • Criminal record certificate (apostilled ACRO certificate or Vietnamese police clearance)
  • Proof of residential address in Vietnam (rental contract or property ownership)

Application Steps

1

Obtain the prerequisite visa or permit

You must already hold a qualifying visa (DN or LV) and, if working, a valid work permit. The TRC builds on top of these.

2

Complete the health check

Visit a government-approved hospital in Vietnam for a medical examination. Results are typically available within 2-3 working days.

3

Compile your application dossier

Assemble all required documents, including notarised translations of any documents not in Vietnamese. Use a certified translator registered with the Vietnamese Notary Office.

4

Submit at the Immigration Department

File your application in person at the provincial Immigration Department where you reside. Processing takes 5-15 working days.

5

Collect your TRC

Return to the Immigration Department to collect your TRC card. It functions as a combined visa and residence permit.

Tips

  • 💡A TRC eliminates the need for visa runs and repeated renewals — it is worth the extra paperwork if you plan to stay in Vietnam for more than a year.
  • 💡TRC holders can open Vietnamese bank accounts more easily and may qualify for lower rates on property rentals.
  • 💡Start the renewal process at least 30 days before your TRC expires to avoid gaps in your legal residence status.
