Long-Term Resident Visa (LTR) — Work-From-Thailand

The LTR visa's "Work-From-Thailand Professional" category is Thailand's answer to the global digital nomad visa trend. It grants a 10-year renewable visa with a personal income tax rate of just 17% for those who qualify. This is a premium visa aimed at high earners — applicants must demonstrate income of at least $80,000/year (or $40,000 with qualifying credentials).

Requirements

  • Valid UK passport with at least 12 months remaining validityCRITICAL
  • Personal income of at least $80,000 USD per year over the past 2 years. If income is between $40,000 and $80,000, you must also hold a master's degree or own intellectual property/investments of at least $250,000 USDCRITICAL
  • Current employment with a company that has been operating for at least 3 years with combined revenue of at least $150 million USD over the past 3 years (for employed applicants)
  • Health insurance with minimum coverage of $50,000 USD
  • Clean criminal record
  • Employment contract or proof of freelance income for the preceding 2 years

Application Steps

1

Check your eligibility category

The LTR visa has four categories: Wealthy Global Citizen, Wealthy Pensioner, Work-From-Thailand Professional, and Highly Skilled Professional. Most digital nomads apply under "Work-From-Thailand Professional".

2

Prepare your financial evidence

Gather 2 years of tax returns, employment contracts, and bank statements demonstrating the income threshold. All documents must be certified or notarised.

3

Apply online via the BOI portal

Submit your application through the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) LTR visa portal at ltr.boi.go.th. Upload all required documentation.

4

Wait for BOI endorsement

The BOI reviews applications within 20 working days. If approved, you will receive an endorsement letter.

5

Collect your visa

Present the BOI endorsement at the Royal Thai Embassy in London or at a Thai Immigration office if you are already in Thailand.

6

Obtain your digital work permit

LTR holders receive a digital work permit that allows remote work. Report your address to Immigration annually instead of every 90 days.

Tips

  • 💡The income threshold is high ($80k+), but the benefits are substantial: 17% flat income tax, exemption from the 4:1 Thai-to-foreigner hiring ratio, and annual (instead of 90-day) reporting.
  • 💡If you do not meet the $80,000 threshold, explore whether a master's degree or qualifying investment can bridge the gap under the lower $40,000 band.
  • 💡Processing times have improved since launch but still average 3-6 weeks. Apply well before your intended relocation date.
